New life for the former mine

The area of the former KWK Polska mine in the Zgoda district has undergone extensive renovation. With the help of EU funds the city restored two winding towers — the Bastion and Headframe towers. At their base a cultural and recreational complex with a labyrinth connecting five thematic zones has been created.

Each zone symbolises a different element and miners' everyday surroundings: earth, air, water, wood and steel. It is a space for relaxation, reflection and learning about the heritage of Swietochlowice's industry.

Labyrinth of five zones

The labyrinth takes you through a narrative about the history and daily life of the mine. Every zone features installations and displays that engage the senses, showing both the hardship and the beauty of miners' work.

  • Earth zone — refers to the underground traditions of mining.
  • Air zone — a reminder of breath and safety on the surface.
  • Water zone — highlights the element that accompanied miners' work.
  • Wood zone — tells about the structures and tools of the former mine.
  • Steel zone — symbolises resilience and the modern character of the complex.

While moving through the labyrinth you can learn about the history of industry in Swietochlowice and discover how the role of the mine has changed over the years.

Culture at height

It is worth climbing or taking the lift to the viewing terrace in the Bastion Tower. The terrace offers a panorama of the city, and inside there is an exhibition devoted to Silesian traditions and beliefs.

The complex includes a cultural building hosting meetings with seniors, artists and numerous workshops for children. Visitors can take part in talks about the history of the KWK Polska Towers, including storytelling tours for organised groups.
